Who is Hannibal Coates?

Self Portrait, 2023

Hannibal Coates is an Australian realist painter based in France. He creates portrait, figurative, and still life oil paintings inspired by Old Master traditions.

Born in the Barossa Valley in rural South Australia, Coates developed an early interest in representational painting grounded in observation, form, and craft.

In 2021, he graduated from Adelaide Central School of Art, before travelling to Florence, Italy to pursue intensive classical training at Charles H Cecil Studios, completing his studies in 2023.

Coates’ practice centres on developing a personal language of oil painting across a range of subject matter, with a primary focus on portraiture. Drawing on the ideas and techniques of the Old Masters, his work explores quiet, intimate moments, often those that exist in-between, revealing character through restraint, nuance, and painterly realism.

He exhibits internationally and has been recognised as a finalist in the Percival Portrait Prize (2022), as well as by the Royal Society of Arts South Australia (2024), where he was awarded a Commended Award.

Hannibal Coates currently lives and works in Paris, France.
